Tenebrae: The word “tenebrae” is the Latin for shadow or darkness. The service begins in light and progresses through the readings of the shadows around the cross of Jesus, and through the reading of psalms into darkness as gradually lights and candles are extinguished. Only one light remains, a candle symbolizing our Lord. Near the end of the service, this Christ candle is removed leaving us in darkness symbolizing the world without Christ, and the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the end,  the Christ candle is restored to its place.
